Titanic: Hidden Mysteries Secrets of the Fateful Voyage review

Posted by admin On February - 10 - 2010

Titanic: Hidden Mysteries Secrets of the Fateful Voyage takes place aboard the R.M.S. Titanic on her fateful maiden voyage across the Atlantic. Your character is a young socialite, Margaret Ashley, one of the fortunate unfortunates who sailed on Titanic and survived.

Margaret, her husband, and their butler congregate at Southampton docks to board the Titanic. Her husband has given Margaret’s ticket to the butler and your first task will be to retrieve your boarding pass. This in turn introduces you to Margaret’s mother who does not want her to leave, not because of some premonition concerning the ship but rather thinks that her husband is not suitable. You will also meet a small boy at the docks who will become instrumental in the game.

Once on board there are a couple more characters to interact with. Along with members of the ships crew, you get to meet one of the ships designers who has integrated a maze of secret passageways in the original plans and has stowed away within them. These secret passages prove invaluable in your quest.
I wouldn’t say that Titanic: Hidden Mysteries Secrets of the Fateful Voyage is a typical hidden object game. As with most of these titles now, it leans more toward the point and click adventure titles. Every object you pick up has a purpose and there is no scouring the screen for random objects. Several times you have to pick up a number of the same items eg 10 ping pong balls but these multiple items also serve a purpose. For instance you have to bat the ping pong balls into vents – it’s a small mini game but nice to break the game play up. This mechanic means you hold items in an inventory which is displayed across the top of the screen.

All in all there are 20 chapters or levels within the game. This gives a good opportunity to explore the ship and the different class system on board. While Margaret and her husband are in the first class cabins, her mother and the boy she met on the docks are not so fortunate. What I do like about the characters in Titanic: Hidden Mysteries Secrets of the Fateful Voyage, is their personality traits. Margaret is privileged through her marriage but still retains a tough determined attitude, Her husband is portrayed as a spoilt, selfish prat and her mother , although separated by status, is determined to be there for her daughter.
Basically, playing as Margaret for the complete game, you must complete sets of puzzles and obstacles to progress the timeline from April 10th the date Titanic left Southampton Docks – to the 15th, when the Titanic sunk beneath the waves. Since you are the only guest who seems to realise the seriousness of the incident, your goal becomes slowing down the effect of the collision to rescue and secure your own family and friends. You can follow different paths within the game producing multiple endings depending on these choices.
Once completed there is an opportunity to play a bonus round. Here you learn the different factors that caused the Titanic to sink and try to rectify them.
The graphics and audio are good although, the graphics may seem a little flat at times there are good water and fire effects and character costume and background design are excellently detailed and indicative of that period. Voice acting was also very good and it’s easy to hear the frustration in Margaret’s voice although the boy’s accent can be a little annoying. The background and ambient sounds were also good providing different atmospheres throughout the ships levels. for instance in the lounge there’s a nice calm gentle atmosphere in contrast with the chugging of the engine rooms

Marks out of 10

Gameplay: 8 highly enjoyable and the puzzles were not too difficult giving more focus to the story
Presentation : 7 well presented with attention to detail. Would’ve liked a bit more movement in the scenes
Storyline : 8 classic storyline and well executed with the class system
Longevity: 8 with the multiple endings it gives plenty of value for money. I’ll be revisiting if only to see if I can somehow leave Margaret’s husband behind !
